High Holiday Prep 101 #6: Why Do We Fast on Yom Kippur?
Between the holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur we enter the Ten Days of Penitence. Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, shares that during this time people often start to ask themselves why Jews fast on certain holidays. There are 5 fast days on the Jewish calendar but the main one is Yom Kippur. Its the only one that is Biblically mandated. It says that we need to afflict our souls. It doesn't tell us exactly what we need to do but it has been interpreted to mean no eating or drinking. The rabbis have added that we also are not allowed to wash, anoint, wear leather or engage in sexual activity. It seems that to a certain extent, Yom Kippur is trying to tell us that we need to die. To have no feelings. But that's not really what its saying. Instead, from time to time, we need to reevaluate ourselves and our souls. The only way for a person to truly appreciate life is to be at the precipice of death. To experience deprivation. To make you pray for a second chance. That is what Yom Kippur is. That is what fasting is all about. We're going to get a second chance. We're going to be forgiven. We're going to be inscribed for a good, health and peaceful New Year.
