The Father Of Cool - Willis Haviland Carrier And Air Conditioning
It was a foggy night and he was going over in his mind the problem of temperature and humidity control. Willis Haviland Carrier developed the first residential 'Weathermaker', an air conditioner for private home use. The Great Depression and then WW2 slowed the non-industrial use of air ...fmtulab's batch-type air dryer: Preliminary studies in ambient ...
A new scale laboratory batch-type, tray air dryer has been designed, constructed and instrumented in the Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery (fmtulab, http://fmtulab.meed-aspete.net) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Educators in the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPETE) . The facility has a vertical drying chamber (500mm x 500mm) and due to it's modular design, one or two horizontal drying chambers in tandem arrangement, can be easily adapted. The dryer operates either as an open or closed cycle.. The flow field inside the dryer is studied through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A three-dimensional model for dryer has been created and the steady state incompressible, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations that formulate the flow problem are solved, incorporating standard and RNG k-ε turbulence models. The simulations are conducted for various testing chamber velocities in the range of 1 to 5 m/s at ambient temperature. The CFD models are evaluated by comparing airflow patterns, velocity distributions and pressures to measured data. Numerical simulations and measurements convince that the new scale laboratory batch-type dryer is able to produce a sufficiently uniform air distribution throughout the testing chamber of the dryer.
The project is in progress and in the near future, more experimental and CFD results will be provided.
